Music Magazine Survey Findings

From the results of my music magazine survey I learned that most people never purchase music magazines at all. I plan to investigate this further and ask them why they do not purchase music magazines - for example: is there not a music magazine in the market to their liking? Are they not interested in reading about music? Or do they just simply know everything they need to know from looking on the internet? Also, most of the people I surveyed said that they were kind of fans of Alternative music, with a few saying no altogether and some saying yes, so this was kind of a mixed bag of results. The most popular of the artists I plan to present in my magazine was by far Arctic Monkeys, with Oasis, The Killers and Catfish and the Bottlemen trailing behind, therefore these are the artists that will feature  prominently in my magazine as they have the largest audience appeal. As well as this, from my survey I also learned that most people expect to see interviews with artists and black and red or blue and white colours in a music magazine. I also learned that not many people would actually decide to purchase a music magazine, but those that would, would be most likely to purchase on a monthly basis and the clear majority would expect to pay around £2-£4. There was an almost even divide between people wanting the chance to win tickets to gigs and wanting money-off vouchers for ticket-booking websites such as Ticketmaster, so as far as freebies go most people would want freebees from a music magazine heavily centred around a gig or live music experience as oppose to free CD demos and meet and greet opportunities. All of the people I surveyed also said that they choose to listen to their music with earphones, which means that my target audience would be largely technology based and would be likely to be in touch with Social Media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, so my music magazine would have to be up to date and modern to appeal to a younger audience.

Alternative Artists Research

I have done some further research into various Alternative artists and these are the selection of artists I have decided to use in my magazine, as there are a mixture of both older and newer artists as then there will be something for every age group in the market. As well as this, there aren't many magazines out in the market that feature new and old bands so I feel this will give my magazine a competitive edge and wider audience appeal.

I have decided to base my magazine on the Alternative genre because at the moment there aren't currently any magazines in the market that produce Alternative magazines with both old and new artists in them, therefore I think this genre would have a wide audience appeal as it would appeal to all ages. I also think that the Alternative genre has a wide variety of artists, whereas other genres such as R&B have a much more limited variety, therefore my magazine would always be diverse and widely appealing.

Music Genres Research

I did some research into different music genres and their most popular and relevant artists, and after weighing up the pros and cons I have decided to choose the Alternative genre for my magazine as it is currently a very popular genre with lots of popular artists therefore the magazine would be up to date and different as there are new Alternative artists being discovered all of the time.

School Magazine Mock-Up

On my front cover I decided to use a picture of students in the sixth form wearing their own clothing as my main headline on the front cover of my magazine is whether or not school uniform affects pupils' learning, therefore I thought this was a relevant picture. As well as this, I found bold black and white writing against the colourful background made the magazine seem less cluttered and look  more professional and sophisticated. I also thought the circular shapes added to the slightly quirkier theme of the magazine as I wanted this magazine to appear as slightly alternative compared to the typical, boring and dated covers that are normally associated with school magazines. I wanted this to appear as something that students could really engage with and feel as if they can relate to this. I just did a basic draft of my contents page to represent where certain parts of the page would be placed, with the editor's note being the main feature, as I think a personal note would make the magazine more relatable and engaging and make reading 'Class-ic' a more personal experience.
